When I was looking into the avenue of oil painted animation, I looked at how other artists had achieved that outcome. One example I found, which had been circulating on social media for a while even before I started this, was an animated film project called ‘Loving Vincent’. For this film, a group of artists painted each scene frame by frame on board. They’d paint one image and then paint over the top to create the next frame. This is an approach I attempted when doing my own oil animation experiments.
Another artist I looked at was Carol Freeman, who wrote and directed a film called ‘The Bird and the Whale’. She has a team of painters who paint frame by frame on a big pane of glass.
